The food production worldwide needs to grow 50% by 2030 in order to meet the rising food demand and to tackle the current food crisis, says UN.
Ben Ki-moon, United Nations General Secretary, told in a summit organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), a UN agency, in Rome that the food production worldwide needs to grow 50% by 2030 to provide food to hungry people. He also said that from $15 to $20 Billion investment is required every year to meet the increasing demand, as reported by ctv.ca.
As per the FAO officials, nearly 850 Million people worldwide are facing famine and malnutrition. On the other hand, excess consumption by obese globally reached US$ 20 Billion. Jacques Diouf, Director General, FAO, said, “diverting around 100 Million Tonnes of cereal to biofuel has had an impact on food prices”, as reported by trinidadexpress on June 4, 2008.
The chief reason for prevailing food crisis worldwide is pressure of developed countries on developing countries to implement liberalized trade barriers. This has forced developing countries to stop growing their own food. Moreover, countries that import food grains from overseas are not concentrating to invest in their own agriculture sector.
Hence, as the food crisis is becoming grimmer, poor countries importing food grains are finding food purchase harder in international markets due to more money. Consequently, the food problem has engulfed all the countries around the world. Besides, rising population across the world has increased the food demand, further worsening the situation.
In addition, the food demand is intensified by rising prosperity, particularly in Asian countries, that is increasing the food consumption. Hence, the world food industry is under huge pressure to meet the food demand. Spiraling food and fuel prices have also made the situation more chaotic, causing riots, protests and instability in countries, which are struggling against food crisis.
According to a Research Analyst at RNCOS, “The contribution of food items in the total expenditure has been falling with increasing domination of food dominated countries on food industry. Thus, UN should moderate its policies to resolve the crisis by regulating demand and production between countries. Moreover, the United Nation should also make a plan that assist in avoiding confrontation between developed and developing countries for food.”
