Organic Food: Sizzling Hot In Food World
May 15, 2007

'Organic food' is a new hot topic in the world of food. It is also boiling in the different life areas, as many products now come with this label. But it is always not as easy as the remark may direct one to trust.

Organic farming in the 1990s, emerged as the biggest U.S. agricultural segment, according to the Agriculture Department of U.S. Organic Farming by 2004, was being done on approximately 3.7 million acres of land in North America.

The non-food and organic food sales in U.S. went up by about 20 percent in the year 2003, to get to US $ 10.8 billion, as per figures from Organic Trade Association (OTA) survey released in May 2004.

The OTA statistics for the year 2005 showed that organic food and beverages sales amounted to around US $13.8 billion signifying 2.5 % of sum-total of the U.S. sales of food. It is a business association based on membership and says that for promoting the organic products in the food market, protection of organic standards' integrity is necessary.

RNCOS published a report on Organic Food named as "
World Organic Food and Beverages Report (2006)" and its analysts estimated that the US organic food sales is likely to grow up to US $ 20 billion by 2010 or earlier. This represents roughly 2% of the total food market. The growth rate of organic food products is likely to continue at 15% - 20% annually as against the rate of growth of less than 1% for conventional food products. A few products, like the organic milk, have achieved 50% annual increase levels.
